What is a DUPR Rating?
DUPR is the world's most accurate pickleball rating system. Here's how it works, why it matters, and how to get yours.
What is DUPR?
DUPR stands for Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating. It's a global, algorithm-based skill rating system for pickleball players — similar to the ELO system used in chess, or UTR in tennis. Unlike other rating systems, DUPR considers every game you play, not just tournament results.
DUPR was co-founded in 2021 by Major League Pickleball (MLP) founder Steve Kuhn, along with pickleball pro player Steve Paranto. It quickly became the de-facto standard rating system adopted by tournaments, clubs, and recreational leagues worldwide.
Unlike USA Pickleball's 5.0 rating scale (which maxes at 5.0), DUPR uses a scale from 2.0 to 8.0, giving it much finer granularity to separate skill levels across the full spectrum from beginner to professional.
How is a DUPR Rating Calculated?
DUPR uses a proprietary algorithm that considers:
- Match outcomes — win or loss
- Score differential — the closer the score, the more accurate the prediction
- Opponent ratings — beating a stronger player earns you more rating points
- Match recency — more recent games are weighted more heavily
- Game volume — your confidence interval narrows as you play more games
The more games you log, the more reliable and accurate your DUPR becomes. DUPR updates dynamically after every logged match, so your rating reflects your current form rather than a snapshot from months ago.
Singles vs Doubles
DUPR tracks your singles and doubles ratings separately. Many players find their doubles rating differs from their singles rating by 0.5–1.0 points, reflecting the different skills each format demands.
The DUPR Rating Scale
DUPR ratings run from 2.000 (true beginner) to 8.000+ (professional). Most recreational players fall between 3.0 and 5.0.
How to Get a DUPR Rating
Getting a DUPR rating is straightforward:
- Create a free account at mydupr.com
- Play matches and have the results submitted — either by a club, tournament director, or by self-reporting with your opponent's confirmation
- After playing at least 3–5 matches, your DUPR will stabilise and become a reliable indicator of your level
Many clubs and facilities now submit results directly to DUPR after organised sessions, so you may already have matches logged if you play at an established venue.
Why Does Your DUPR Rating Matter?
- Fair matchmaking — DUPR lets organisers create balanced events with players of similar skill levels
- Tournament entry — Many tournaments use DUPR brackets to ensure competitive, fair draws
- Track progress — Watch your rating climb as your game improves
- Credibility — A verified DUPR is increasingly the standard way to communicate your skill level to potential partners and opponents
