Event Format Guide

King of the Court Pickleball

One of the most exciting pickleball formats — fast rotations, competitive play, and everyone stays active. Here's exactly how it works.

What is King of the Court?

King of the Court (KOTC) is a high-energy pickleball format where players rotate between courts based on their match results. Winners advance to the "King's Court" (the top court), while losers move down to a lower court. The goal is to win your way to the top court and accumulate as many points as possible while holding your crown.

KOTC is ideal for social sessions with 8–20 players across 2–4 courts. Everyone keeps playing throughout the session with minimal downtime between games.

How it Works

The basic setup:

  • Courts are numbered 1 (King's Court, highest) to N (lowest)
  • Each court has a game between two players (singles) or two teams (doubles)
  • After each game: the winner stays or moves up, the loser moves down
  • Players waiting to play queue at the bottom court and rotate in

Rotation Rules

Winner advances

The winner of each game moves to the next higher court (or stays on Court 1 as the "King"). On Court 1, the winner accumulates a point or crown token.

Loser drops down

The loser of each game moves to the next lower court. On the lowest court, the loser goes to the end of the queue.

Players from the queue

The next player(s) in the queue always rotate onto the lowest court to replace the player who just moved up.

Doubles variation

In doubles KOTC, you can either keep fixed partners or randomise them each rotation. Randomising partners gives more variety and prevents dominant pairs from dominating the King's Court.

Scoring Options

Option A: Crown Points

Each game played on Court 1 (King's Court) earns the winner a "crown" point. The player with the most crown points at the end of the session wins. This rewards consistency at the top court.

Option B: Win Count

Track total wins across all courts. The player with the most total wins at the end wins. This rewards winning at every level, not just the top court.

Option C: Timed Session

Run the session for a fixed time (e.g., 90 minutes). At the end of time, whoever is on Court 1 is the reigning King/Queen. Simpler to manage but less competitive.

Popular Variations

  • Queen of the Court — Women-only version, same rules
  • Mixed KOTC — Fixed mixed doubles pairs competing through the rotation
  • Double Elimination — Must lose twice before moving down, reducing the luck factor
  • Team KOTC — Players are assigned to permanent "teams" and team points accumulate as individuals win on each court

Organiser Tips

Game length

Short games (first to 7 or 9) keep the rotation fast and everyone active. Long games (to 11 or 15) increase queue time. For 12+ players, timed games of 6–8 minutes work best.

Randomise doubles partners each round

Assign partners randomly at the start of each game to prevent dominant pairs. Pickle+ does this automatically in its KOTC mode.

Display live standings

Showing the live crown-point standings on a board (or on Pickle+'s live dashboard) adds excitement and motivation to work up to Court 1.

Run King of the Court on Pickle+

Pickle+ has a built-in King of the Court mode that handles all the logistics automatically:

  • Players sign up in advance, you approve the guest list
  • Pickle+ generates random pairings for each rotation
  • Players submit scores from their phones
